Does Invisalign Push Teeth Back?

Many patients ask us this question before starting their Invisalign treatment: “Will my teeth be pushed back?”

This concern is understandable. No one wants their teeth to “move backward” without knowing why.

The reality? Invisalign doesn’t systematically push all teeth backward. Each movement is calculated according to your specific needs.

How Invisalign Actually Moves Your Teeth

Invisalign doesn’t blindly push your teeth backward.

The treatment follows a personalized movement plan that can:

  • Close gaps between spaced teeth
  • Move forward teeth that are too far back
  • Rotate misaligned teeth
  • Pull back certain teeth if necessary
  • Create space for proper alignment

Each aligner moves your teeth a maximum of 0.2 mm. This is microscopic and totally controlled.

When Does Invisalign Push Teeth Back?

Protruding Teeth (Protrusion)

If your front teeth are too far forward, Invisalign will indeed pull them back.

Why? To create a harmonious smile and improve your bite.

Result: Better positioned teeth, not “sunken in.”

Lack of Space in the Mouth

When your teeth overlap due to lack of space, there are two solutions:

  1. Widen the dental arch (slightly expand)
  2. Slightly pull back certain teeth to free up necessary space

Your practitioner chooses the best option for your case.

Correcting Jaw Misalignment

If your upper jaw is too far forward compared to the lower one, a slight retraction of the upper teeth restores balance.

Important: This is never excessive. Everything is calculated to the millimeter.

Why Are These Movements Safe?

Ultra-Precise 3D Planning

Before starting, a 3D scan of your mouth is performed with advanced technologies.

Result: The practitioner visualizes exactly where each tooth should go, week by week.

Nothing is left to chance.

Progressive and Gentle Movements

Each aligner only moves your teeth 0.2 mm.

Over 20 aligners: Maximum 4 mm of total movement. In practice: Most retractions are only 1-2 mm.

Your teeth adapt naturally, without trauma.

Mandatory Regular Check-ups

Every 6-8 weeks, check-ups verify that your teeth are moving exactly as planned.

If needed: The plan can be adjusted in real time.

Your safety: No excessive movement can go unnoticed.

What Will NOT Happen with Invisalign

Signs of a Well-Managed Treatment

During Treatment

  • Your aligners fit perfectly
  • You feel slight pressure in the first days of each new aligner
  • Your teeth move visibly but harmoniously
  • Your practitioner validates progress at each visit

Final Result

  • More harmonious smile
  • Better chewing function
  • Perfectly aligned teeth
  • Improved facial profile (never degraded)

Tips for Optimal Movement

Wear Your Aligners 22 Hours/Day Minimum

Less than 22h: Your teeth risk not moving enough or moving backward.

22h minimum: Guarantees controlled movement according to the planned schedule.

Follow Your Check-up Appointments

Our consultations every 6-8 weeks allow us to:

  • Check progression
  • Adjust if necessary
  • Reassure about ongoing movements

Change Aligners at the Right Time

Too early: Incomplete movement, approximate results

Too late: Unnecessary treatment slowdown

On time: Optimal progression and predictable results

Invisalign Technologies for Precise Control

The Invisalign system uses specialized technologies:

  • ClinCheck® Pro: Ultra-precise simulation of each movement
  • SmartTrack® Material: Material optimized for gentle movements
  • SmartForce® Attachments: Millimetric control of rotations and retractions

These tools allow perfect mastery of when, how and why to retract certain teeth according to each case.

What You Should Remember

  • Invisalign can retract teeth if your treatment plan requires it
  • Each movement is programmed, measured and secured
  • The goal is always a more harmonious smile, never excessive retraction
  • Your practitioner controls the entire process
